Carys Bray

Carys Bray is a novelist and short story writer. Brought up a devout Mormon, she left the church in her early thirties and replaced religion with writing. Her highly acclaimed debut novel, A Song for Issy Bradley, was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Award, the Desmond Elliott Prize, and won the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award.

Her writing has been described by critics as empathetic, compassionate, wise and skilful. We love Carys’ writing for its emotional truthfulness, its incisive perceptions about human relationships and its tender ability to balance light and shade, humour and pain.

Her short story collection, Sweet Home, has been hailed as 'having shades of Angela Carter', and her second novel, The Museum of You, was published in June 2016.

'When I was a little girl I loved to read - if I didn't have anything to read at breakfast time I would read the cereal packets. I was in my early thirties when I crawled out from under a pile of nappies and started to wonder what I was going to do with the rest of my life. It didn’t take me long to decide. I started to read a lot of short fiction and I began to realise that I had plenty of things to write about.'

Carys lives in Southport, Merseyside, with her husband and four children.
