Joseph Lucien Warren was born in London in 1971. His father, a graphic artist, ran a small studio, which gave the young Joe an early introduction to the tools of typographic design. He still bears a scar on his hand from an attempt, aged 3, to use a scalpel!
The urge to create has stayed with him ever since, and manifests itself in works of assemblage and montage. An avid collector of vernacular typography, printed matter, signage and cartography, Joseph has acquired from around the globe an enormous (and growing) scrapbook, ready to be incorporated into his artistic creations. As so much of our graphic past becomes obliterated in the name of progress, this archive is growing in importance.
Joseph is a first class graduate of Central St Martins School of Art, and has worked in design studios in London and Los Angeles. He now runs imagesurgery – a creative consultancy and online gallery producing and selling his own and other artists’ work to customers worldwide.
The iconic butterfly series is Joseph’s most recognisable body of work and he continues to develop the concept by acquiring ever more beautiful and unusual maps to produce these much-coveted artworks.
